Established by the Garvan Institute in 2012, the Kinghorn Centre for Clinical Genomics (KCCG) advances the use of genomic information in patient care. KCCG acts as a mechanism to translate genomic research information into patient care. To do this KCCG employs experts in genomics including researchers, bioinformaticians, clinicians, educators and software engineers. We use world-leading OMICS based technology to enhance diagnosis and treatment for patients. 

KCCG is integrated with numerous state and nationwide flagship genomic research projects, and partners with many national and international collaborative organisations and funding bodies. 

As part of KCCG’s core strategic aims, the ‘Genomic Technologies Group’ extends and complements Garvan’s capabilities in genomic, transcriptomic, and epigenomic research by implementing, evaluating, and refining new and existing technologies for both clinical and research applications and, where applicable, establish a pathway for translation of new technologies and techniques into practical clinical outcomes.

We are seeking a Research Technician to work with the Genomic Applications Developer of the Genomic Technologies Group to process samples for third generation sequencing at a commercially certifiable standard of quality. The role will also involve performing laboratory protocols, experimental workflows, record keeping, and data entry using best practices.

The Opportunity

Reporting to the Genomic Applications Developer, this position will be responsible for helping to provide direction and support in clinical genomics, genome informatics and translational research in cancer genomics. This will include:

  • Assist and support the Genomic Applications Developer in the laboratory;
  • Perform experimental protocols under supervision of the Genomic Applications Developer;
  • Manage and prepare biological samples for sequencing on the Oxford Nanopore Technologies platform (Flongle, MinION, GridION and PromethION devices), including pre- and post-quality control reporting;
  • Perform sample tracking and data entry, including Laboratory Information Management Systems (LIMS);
  • Perform inventory of research consumables and reagents;
  • Maintain detailed experimental logs in electronic laboratory management software (Confluence, JIRA, LabArchives, etc);
  • Help prepare and write research reports;

The position will be offered part-time for 1 year in the first instance.

About You

  • BSc in Biochemistry, Molecular Biology, or a related biomedical science degree;
  • Familiarity with a laboratory environment;
  • Excellent laboratory skills, organisational, record keeping, and time management skills;
  • Excellent attention to detail;
  • Drive and commitment to produce high quality experimental outcomes;
  • Knowledge of good laboratory practices;
  • Capacity to understand details in experimental protocols and independently seek pertinent information in scientific literature;
  • Good interpersonal skills and work cooperatively in a team;
  • Familiarity with high-throughput sequencing technologies and other experimental methods involving RNA and DNA.

Desired

  • Experience in a molecular bioscience laboratory (or similar);
  • Experience manipulating RNA and DNA;
  • Familiarity with electronic laboratory notebooks;
  • Familiarity with Laboratory Information Management Systems (LIMS);
  • Familiarity with Oxford nanopore sequencing technology.
