Research Officer - Mitochondrial Metabolism & Ageing

Job No: GC201905
Location: Darlinghurst, NSW

The Diabetes and Metabolism Research Division undertakes research contributing to the worldwide effort to understand the causal relationship between genetics, the environment and the development of non-communicable disease. In particular, research in the Mitochondrial Metabolism and Ageing Group is focused on identifying signal transduction pathways that are important in metabolic control of healthspan, using this molecular blueprint to develop exercise, dietary, nutraceutical and pharmaceutical therapies to modulate the pathway of interest.

The Opportunity

We currently have an opportunity for a Research officer to join the Mitochondrial Metabolism and Ageing Group under the direct supervision of Dr Andrew Philp. The Research Officer will lead a program of work studying the role of mitochondrial quality control in the metabolic regulation of healthspan. To achieve this, the post holder will head the C. elegans team within the Philp Research Group focused on understanding the biological role of pharmacological and nutraceutical modulators of mitochondrial biogenesis, dynamics and mitophagy in the context of healthspan extension. Further they will be involved with translational studies in cell and murine models of Mitochondrial disease, Sarcopenia and Cancer Cachexia. The Research Officer will participate in multidisciplinary team meetings, supervise honours and post-graduate students and provide support for collaborative projects involving other scientists within and external to the institute.

The key responsibilities are:

  • Conducting experiments and other duties in a timely, efficient and diligent manner to assist in the overall project progressing expeditiously.
  • Evaluating and applying alternative methodologies to optimise sensitivity and reproducibility.
  • Collating experimental data, writing up experimental procedures and contributing to the interpretation of experimental results for academic and industrial partners.
  • Participating in weekly meetings of the Mitochondrial Metabolism and Ageing Research Group and presenting (on a rostered basis) to all members of Garvan.

The role will be full-time for 2 years in the first instance and the salary offered is $81,935 pa.

About You

You will have the following skills and experience:

  • PhD in an area of science utilising the C. elegans model.
  • 2 years of relevant research experience.
  • A proven track record working with C. elegans is a direct requirement for this position.
  • Specific experience in studying mitochondrial biology utilising the C. elegans model is a direct requirement for this position.
  • Experience using confocal and transmission electron microscopy (or an alternative advanced imaging approach) is a direct requirement for this position.
  • Experience drafting and finalising scientific manuscripts.
  • Experience with conducting basic laboratory analyses such as Western blotting, RT-PCR and protein and hormone analyses by ELISA.
